Def Jam’s original behind the scenes men come to HIGH Museum
Cey Adams and Bill Adler will be on hand at High Museum telling stories as part of a slide lecture, and fielding a Q&A with the audience.

On Wednesday, November 16 Def Jam Recordings’ former publicist Bill Adler and former creative director Cey Adams make a stop at HIGH Museum to reminisce about the years they spent helping launch the careers of dozens of ’80s hip-hop staples including Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, 3rd Bass, Slick Rick and a whole lot more.

Adler and Cey are touring with their latest book in-tow, Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label (Rizzoli). The book is an oral history that pretty much tells it like it is (or was) from an insiders perspective.

Adler and Cey’s work together began in 1984 when they met at Def Jam, and they’ve devoted the last three decades to examining, defining and archiving hip-hop culture. Adler has worked as a journalist, critic, publicist, biographer, label exec., curator, editor, documentary filmmaker and teacher, and is best known for writing and producing And You Don’t Stop: 30 Years of Hip-Hop, a five-part documentary series for VH1. He is currently the director of the Adler Archive, a research library of hip-hop-oriented books, photographs, newspaper and magazine stories, audio and video recordings, and advertisements and flyers.

Adams is a hip-hop graphic artist who served as the creative director at Def Jam from 1984-1999.

Adler co-authored the book along with Dan Charnas (The Big Payback), while the preface features contributions from Def Jam’s founders Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons.

Cey and Adler will be on hand at High Museum telling stories as part of a slide lecture, showing off photos and videos, and fielding questions from audience members. They’ll be signing copies of the book as well.
