Ben Allen and Cut Copy locked in Twitter battle over coffee and basketball

Game five of the playoffs is tonight. If the Hawks lose this one, they’re out, and Cut Copy won’t have to buy coffee for the foreseeable future

Atlanta producer Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Reptar) has become embroiled in a Twitter battle with Australian electro pop tarts Cut Copy, who have upped the stakes by turning to the press.

On May 4, the Boston Phoenix ran an interview with Cut Copy guitarist Tim Hoey, who is quoted as saying, “We’re currently locked in battle with Ben Allen, who mixed our last record Zonoscope and who is a big Hawks fan. We have a pound of coffee bet per game this series. But this is bigger than Cut Copy and coffee at the moment.”

Apparently Cut Copy are a bunch of Boston Celtics fans, and what Hoey is referring to when he says, “this is bigger than Cut Copy and coffee,” is an epic game of HORSE that went down between Allen and Cut Copy last year. Cut Copy lost, and as a result they had to take a trip to San Francisco Coffee here in Atlanta and each drink one large iced coffee (documented above). Apparently the members of Cut Copy are also a bunch of coffee snobs, and to their discerning palettes and sensibilities, drinking an iced coffee is a disgrace that’s on par with going to a bar and ordering a wine spritzer.

With the Hawks and the Celtics playing each other in the first round of the playoffs, Allen and the Aussies have each wagered on who will win, with a pound of coffee per game going to the winner. There’s been an awful lot of sass coming from Cut Copy camp’s Twitter feed as of late, and it all sort of culminates with the following Tweets:

If you follow basketball, you know that the Hawks have pretty much been having their asses handed to them, but that’s kind of a moot point when considering the absurdity of an Australian band talking smack to an Atlanta producer about a basketball team from Boston.

When reached for comment, Allen would only say, “Maybe they should stick to coffee and leave the basketball to us.”
