Small Reactions play live for Public Radio Sessions

Get a glimpse at Small Reactions in the midst of a transitional phase.

Public Radio Sessions recently paired up with Small Reactions to record five live numbers. The session captures the group in a transitional phase:  Scott Hoffman (guitar, vocals), Clinton Callahan (bass), CL contributor Sean Zearfoss (drums), and Ross Politi (guitar) power through three songs from the group’s debut album, Similar Phantoms (“Beta Max (1981),” “Hung From Wire,” “Saint Robes”), while also showing off two unreleased numbers, “Alles” and “Sliding Glass Nightmare.”

And yes, Ross Politi, formerly of Del Venicci, has joined the fold, replacing keyboard player Sam Jacobsen. The shuffled lineup yields new songs that are shorter, and more direct in terms of both performance and arrangement. Each one operates on a slightly more complex level, and the addition of a second guitarist ramps up the energy while dialing back the Krautrock jam in favor of more variety in tempo and style.

Keep an eye out for more news regarding Small Reactions’ second album, due out later this year. In the meantime, videos are posted below.
