In the whirlwind of Atlanta’s dining scene, it’s easy to get caught up in the newest restaurant, the latest closing, or the most recent chef to make it on reality television. For this year’s Food Issue, I wanted to take a step back and assess the city’s restaurants from a different perspective — to look at what endures. Here’s our take on what makes us love eating in Atlanta — our... | more...

10) Pura Vida is the stage for recent “Top Chef” contestant Hector Santiago to perform his avant-garde magic with tapas. No other chef in the city gets quite as successfully crazy with the form. Faves have included the duck confit with caramelized plantains and steamed coconut buns filled with pork belly, cabbage and pickled chilies.

Favorite dish: Santiago’s mofongo, a Puerto Rican specialty,...

5) Livingston

Listen, this restaurant is just fun. Located in the newly remodeled Georgian Terrace hotel across the street from the Fox Theatre, it embodies a kind of retro glamour that’s exactly what you want on a special occasion. You’ll feel glamorous just for being there. The grand dining room and the lovely patio both beg for Champagne, and Gary Mennie’s New American menu is just like the...

We all know the feeling: that hunger, rearing its head deep in the night. When a belly full of booze after a long night out demands nutrition of the non-liquid variety. Or perhaps, after your shift, cooking or serving others all night long, you want a meal in a decent setting that you don’t have to make yourself.

Traditionally, Atlanta has not been a city of late-night dining, at least not...

Beef short ribs (Kalbi) at Chosun Ok: For Korean barbecue, there are three criteria that separate the men from the boys: The restaurant must use charcoal instead of gas or electric grills; the marinade has to be balanced; and the panchan (side items) should be plentiful and fresh. This quirky restaurant gets all three right every time. 5865 Buford Highway, Doraville. 770-452-1821.

I do what I can to eat food grown locally.

During the summer, I shop at my neighborhood farmer’s market. I buy locally raised meats when I can afford them. I make a feeble attempt at growing my own veggies. And the milk my son drinks gallons of per week comes from a Georgia dairy.

I do this for a few reasons – partly because it’s better for the environment and my community, partly because...

Ask Mike Buckner how long his family’s been on the land he’s standing on, and he’ll answer, “Since the Indians.”

Clad in overalls and a worn cotton shirt, Buckner is the seventh generation to live on Fielder’s plantation. The trip to the farm entails an hour’s drive from the nearest interstate down country, and sometimes dirt, roads.

Buckner and his family still live in the 1830s plantation...

During my week of local eating, many farmers kept me delighted. Steve Miller kept me fed.

Miller’s certainly able to come up with the pretty heirlooms and fancy eggplants that are the summer currency at a farmers’ market. But when you’re surviving on local produce alone, the staples – onions, potatoes, greens and stewing tomatoes – become entirely more important.

On his Clarkston farm and on...

Ray Lopes is severely allergic to bee stings. With his biological aversion to bees and his thick New York City accent, he’s the last person I expected to find producing honey on 109 bucolic acres in Williamson, Ga.

So how did a kid from Staten Island end up tending honeybees in rural Georgia? “My summer job as a teenager was to work on farms in upstate New York,” Lopes explains. “I learned to...

OK, I’m not going to sugarcoat it: There are a lot of overripe, flat tasting, or stickily sweet Georgia wines. I should know — I spent my week on the Georgia diet valiantly drinking my way through the state.

But there were exceptions, most notably Frogtown Cellars. Not only are its wines highly drinkable – some even downright delicious – the winery also represents the potential the state has...
