Excepter/LebLaze

The Troglodytes/Life in the Wilderness split 12-inch EP

Leblaze and Excepter evoke a less sophisticated era of mutant funk with this Hoss Records split EP. On the A-side, Excepter relishes the fuzz and clunk of analog deficiencies. Primitive fidelity and sci-fi electronics re-create the culture-jamming creep of Throbbing Gristle circa 1979. In “My Heart Is Broke,” deconstructed scraps from Nirvana’s “Dumb” are reduced to sonic debris. This is pop-music terrorism in its purist form.

Leblaze’s “Life in the Wilderness” is a chunky hybrid of prog-rock rhythms and future funk. Like a soundtrack to an Italian horror flick, one can almost see werewolves dominating the dancefloor while a searing flute solo plays out. Like Excepter’s side, all sense of structure dissolves into noisy loops. These grooves are not for the faint of heart, but for the mutinous in spirit.
